Case Summary
Shortly after the U.S. Capitol riot, a tipster approached the FBI with the information that Tyler Tew had posted on Facebook that he was at the Capitol during the insurrection, court documents indicate. A search warrant served on Google showed that a mobile device associated with Tew was at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and surveillance camera footage inside the Capitol shows an individual that the bureau has identified as Tew entering the building through the Senate parliamentarian's door, according to court documents. Shortly after this footage, pepper balls were fired in his direction. Messages from his cellphone, obtained through a search warrant, reportedly showed Tew bragging that he "was inside" the Capitol and got "pepper sprayed in the face for my country." Two days after the riot, Tew allegedly wrote his spouse, "I stormed the capital [sic] building FOR YOU!!!!" In the days following, Tew messaged multiple individuals and seemingly acknowledged that he had been inside the Capitol during the riot, according to a federal filing.
