Case Summary

Stephen Baker recorded live footage under the alias “Stephen Ignoramus” during the protests at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, according to court documents. Some media outlets have used his footage in news reports. Once inside, Baker is allegedly heard on tape saying: “All right, what’s up, y’all? How you guys doin’? Super-intense. Welcome, I am Stephen. I’m a livestreamer and a musician. We’re having fun, huh? Repent and believe in Jesus.” Baker also makes multiple references to members from the far-right groups The Red Elephants and Oath Keepers, identifying some of them by name, during his livestream. According to court documents, the FBI identified a profile page of a Washington, D.C., music store featuring Baker, on which he describes himself as a “multi-instrumentalist, composer, and business owner who studied music at Western Michigan University, before moving to the D.C. area.” The profile further states that Baker operates a recording/rehearsal studio in Hyattsville, Md., and that he has performed at venues including the 9:30 Club, the Howard Theatre, the Black Cat and Rock & Roll Hotel. Baker is also seen on video saying, “I was inside for like an hour, dude. I was one of like the last 10 people in there. ... I’m on Instagram and YouTube. I’m Stephen Ignoramus. I don’t matter though — this s*** is history.” A witness who was interviewed by the FBI stated that they’ve known Baker for about 10 years and were alarmed by the content of those videos, which included, according to the witness, the “advancement of conspiracy theories and mockery of minority groups.”
