Background
A jury convicted Stockman on April 12, 2018 of 23 counts arising from diversion of charitable donations to personal expenses and political campaigns. DOJ described $1,250,571.65 solicited under false pretenses.
Original Case
A S.D. Tex. jury convicted Stockman April 12, 2018 of 23 counts, including mail and wire fraud, campaign-finance/FEC-related conspiracy and false-statement offenses, excessive coordinated campaign contributions, money laundering, and a false tax return. He was sentenced November 7, 2018 to 120 months’ imprisonment, three years’ supervised release, and $1,014,718.51 restitution.
Clemency
December 22, 2020: commutation of the remaining prison term, not a pardon. The White House stated that Stockman remained subject to supervised release and the restitution order exceeding $1 million.
Trump Connection
Former Republican officials Bob McEwen and Bob Barr, evangelical leader James Dobson, and conservative activist L. Brent Bozell advocated for Stockman. The White House framed the decision as humanitarian, citing his age, preexisting health conditions, COVID-19 infection in prison, and more than two years already served. Trump commuted only the remaining prison term, leaving the convictions, supervised release, and restitution in place.
