Case Summary
Salvatore Vassallo pushed and grabbed Metropolitan Police Officer Mark Eveland while Eveland was standing near a ledge, prosecutors say. Court documents show the incident took place on the Upper West Terrace around 4:30 in the afternoon on Jan. 6, 2021. Investigators say while law enforcement was trying to tell people to leave the area, Vassallo faced officers, lit a cigar, and eventually charged forward. According to court documents, Vassallo’s actions were documented by body-worn cameras and in a YouTube video. Investigators say Vassallo can be seen wearing a camouflage baseball hat, a bandana, a gray backpack and gray pants. A former neighbor positively identified Vassallo in pictures from the Capitol, prosecutors say. A tipster brought Vassallo to the attention of the FBI in June of 2021. Vassallo was arrested in September of 2022.
