Original Case
Ross Ulbricht created and operated Silk Road, an online marketplace designed to conceal the identities and locations of buyers and sellers. The site used the Tor network and Bitcoin and became a major venue for illegal drug sales and other unlawful goods and services. Federal prosecutors identified Ulbricht as the site's operator under the name Dread Pirate Roberts. A jury convicted Ulbricht on all seven federal counts, including narcotics-distribution conspiracy, continuing criminal enterprise, computer-hacking conspiracy, false-identification-document trafficking, and money laundering. The court imposed life imprisonment and ordered $183,961,921 in forfeiture. The Second Circuit affirmed the judgment, and the Supreme Court declined review.
Clemency
Trump granted Ulbricht a full and unconditional pardon on January 21, 2025, one day after returning to office. Unlike the commutation promised during the campaign, the pardon ended the life sentence and relieved the federal consequences of the seven convictions, leading to Ulbricht’s release from prison.
Trump Connection
Ulbricht's release became a longstanding cause among Libertarian Party activists and cryptocurrency advocates, who argued that his life sentence was excessive. While seeking Libertarian support at the party's May 2024 national convention, Trump promised that, if elected, he would commute Ulbricht's sentence on his first day in office. Trump acted on January 21, 2025, one day after his inauguration, but granted a full pardon rather than the commutation he had promised. The documented connection is a public campaign commitment made to a political constituency; the available record does not identify a prior personal relationship between Trump and Ulbricht.
