Case Summary
“Took some pepper spray & tear gas breaching the front doors…Worth it,” Robert William DeGregoris allegedly wrote on Twitter on Jan. 6, 2021, under an account named “Sovereign Patriot (@dadbodbob)." The FBI received a tip about the Twitter post and then used social media and Verizon cell phone data to track him down, court records indicate. Agents were also able to trace his commute from Virginia, where DeGregoris resides, to Washington, D.C., using a metro transit card he purchased the day before the riot. Surveillance footage allegedly shows DeGregoris pushing his way to the entrance of the tunnel at the U.S. Capitol and at one point "possibly striking" the helmet of a police officer near him, according to court documents. During an interview with the FBI, DeGregoris told agents “I don’t know what that is” about his alleged Twitter post.
Case History
DeGregoris pleaded Not Guilty to all charges. Bench trial held 7/8-7/10/2024; Verdict on 10/4/2024 of Guilty on all charges. Sentencing set for 2/7/2025. On 1/21/2025, the court grants the government’s motion to dismiss the case with prejudice
