Case Summary
Phillip Bromley, a nurse anesthetist from Alabama, was just outside the Speaker's Lobby in the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, when he said, according to court documents, that he witnessed a U.S. Capitol Police officer shoot Ashli Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran and Trump supporter. In a video posted to Parler, court documents say that Bromley said he was reminding SWAT officers “of their oath” when “a gunshot went off.” Bromley allegedly said in the video that it “did not look like a survivable wound” and then described what Babbitt was wearing and then added, “They shot her and she is dead.” According to court documents, he concluded the narrative by saying, “My name is Phillip Bromley.” Bromley’s account of what took place was just one of three videos that allegedly placed him inside the Capitol just outside the Speaker's Lobby during the insurrection. According to court documents, other people in the mob posted videos that placed someone who looked like Bromley there, and surveillance video from the Capitol appeared to do that, too. Officials matched Bromley’s Alabama driver’s license picture with stills from the video. According to sentencing memorandums filed in federal court, Bromley served in the U.S. Army Reserves and in the National Guard as a medic.
