Case Summary

A tipster called the FBI after overhearing Nicholas Patrick Hendrix talking about being pepper-sprayed at the U.S. Capitol, according to court documents. In a later interview with agents from the bureau, Hendrix admitted that he entered the Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021, and that he knew it was illegal to do so. Hendrix told agents that on Jan. 5, 2021, he drove from where he lives near Portland, Maine, to Boston and then took a bus from there to Washington, D.C. Wearing a sign around his neck that read "STOP THE COMMUNIST & TERRORIST REVOLUTION" and brandishing an American flag, Hendrix followed the crowd to the Capitol after the pro-Trump rally and said the crowd "pushed" its way in, court documents indicate. In his FBI interview, Hendrix said that there was "not too much resistance from law enforcement" and that he believed the U.S. Capitol Police "were quitting and allowing them to go inside." Hendrix is also allegedly seen in security footage from inside the building that day. According to sentencing memos filed in court, Hendrix served in the U.S. Army.
