Case Summary

According to documents filed by prosecutors in federal court, Nathan Earl Hughes pushed against police and worked with other rioters to attack police lines guarding the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection. Photos cited by prosecutors show a man identified as Hughes wearing a patch from InfoWars, the far-right conspiratorial website led by Alex Jones. As part of the confict between rioters and the police guarding the tunnel on the west front of the Capitol, Hughes allegedly pulled police riot shields away from law enforcement and back towards other rioters. At one point, Hughes told other rioters to "pull them out!" according to court documents. Hughes allegedly posted on social media on the day of the riot, "I will always back the blue until the blue doesn't back us." Court documents indicate that open source researchers identified Hughes to law enforcement. Hughes was arrested on Aug. 30, 2023, in Fayetteville, Ark.
