Case Summary
Matthew Jay Webler posted multiple videos to Facebook in which he showed footage from inside the U.S. Capitol during the riot on Jan. 6, 2021, and also discussed breaching the building himself, federal prosecutors allege. In one video taken from inside the building, Webler allegedly shouted "1776!" Surveillance footage cited by prosecutors allegedly shows Webler entering the Capitol through a broken window, while wearing a large flag with the letter "Q" on it -- a popular piece of imagery with the the pro-Trump conspiracy theory known as QAnon. Webler also posted to Facebook that he believed the crowd inside the Capitol was peaceful and that he was "proud of myself for not getting caught up to [sic] much and having the sense to stand up to someone trying to vandalize the place," according to court documents. Webler was arrested on Dec. 3, 2021, in Decatur, Ga.
Case History
Webler pleaded Guilty to one charge: Parading, Picketing or Demonstrating in a Capitol Building. The other charges are dismissed. Sentenced on 5/3/2022 to 45 days incarceration; $500 Restitution; $10 special assessment. Webler received a full pardon on January 20, 2025
