Case Summary
Federal investigators were tipped off to Mathew Capsel's involvement in the Capitol breach by two individuals who flagged his social media posts about the riot. Charging documents say a video Capsel posted shows him fighting against National Guardsmen attempting to hold the line with riot shields. In another video posted to TikTok, Capsel is seen allegedly fighting against National Guardsmen until he is pepper-sprayed and charging against a lined group of National Guardsman, running into their protective shields. Some of Capsel's social media accounts are under the name Mateo Q or feature the letter Q in some prominent fashion, according to court documents. It is not clear whether that is a reference or embrace of the QAnon conspiracy claims.
Case History
Capsel pleaded Guilty to the single charge. Sentenced on 12/16/2022 to 18 months incarceration; 24 months of Supervised Release; Special Assessment of $100 and Restitution of $2,000. Capsel received a full pardon on January 20, 2025
