Case Summary
Mark Sami Ibrahim worked for the Drug Enforcement Administration as a special agent, and several weeks before Jan. 6, 2021, he had "given notice to the DEA of his intention to resign," according to charging documents. Then, while "on personal leave from the DEA" and not on duty for the government, he took part in the chaos in restricted areas outside the U.S. Capitol that day, prosecutors allege. Ibrahim "posed for several photographs in which he flashed and displayed his DEA badge and firearm" outside of the Capitol and entered into restricted areas outside the building, prosecutors say. He has not been accused of breaching the Capitol building. At one point, Ibrahim allegedly climbed onto the Peace Monument on Capitol grounds and "took a video of himself delivering a monologue." In March 2021, Ibrahim gave a voluntary interview to federal investigators from the Department of Justice alongside his attorney and allegedly denied ever displaying his DEA badge or gun while at the Capitol. Ibrahim told investigators that he went to the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, with a friend, who had been asked by the FBI to help document the event, the court documents state. The investigators then interviewed that friend, who allegedly said that Ibrahim's story was concocted to "cover his a**," and that Ibrahim actually went to the Capitol that day to try to promote a political podcast and cigar brand. Ibrahim was arrested on July 20, 2021.

Ibrahim pleaded Not Guilty to all charges. On 10/27/2022, the court dismisses Count 4, False Statements and Representations. Stipulated bench trial set for 1/23/2025. On 1/22/2025, the court grants the government’s motion to dismiss the case with prejudice.
