Case Summary
According to charging documents, Marcos Panayiotou is a reservist in the U.S. Marine Corps and wore a Camp Pendleton sweatshirt with the name and logo of his former battalion into the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021. Panayiotou can allegedly be seen in various images in the sweatshirt and also wearing a red hat which read: MAKE POLITICIANS AFRAID AGAIN. Days after the riot, the FBI received a report from someone whose friend watched a video that allegedly showed Panayiotou inside the Capitol building and also alerted agents to Panayiotou’s military background. Court documents say that agents confirmed with the Defense Department that he is a Marine reservist. Agents spoke to multiple people who identified Panayiotou, including a close family member who described him as very patriotic but added he “does stupid things sometimes," court documents indicate.
Case History
Panayiotou pleaded Guilty to Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building. The other charges are dismissed. Sentenced 11/29/2022 to 14 days of intermittent incarceration, 36 months of probation, $1,500 fine, $500 restitution, $10 special assessment. Panayiotou received a full pardon on January 20, 2025
