Case Summary
Landon Kenneth Copeland was first identified by the FBI through a Facebook account named "lostforevermore." Court documents indicate that the account showed photographs of him posing in front of multiple Washington, D.C., landmarks and at the Jan. 6, 2021 pro-Trump rally. Law enforcement used these photos, and the clothes Copeland was wearing, to help place him in videos showing a mob of people attempting to breach a police line near the U.S. Capitol that day. In the videos, Copeland can allegedly be seen pushing another person in the crowd into the police line, grabbing an officer's jacket and using a riot shield to push back on the officers. According to court documents, Copeland is also seen in an Instagram video that day throwing a metal police barricade toward multiple police officers. In an interview with the FBI, Copeland admitted to "fighting with police officers" but said he did not enter the Capitol building. In a detention memorandum filed in federal court, Copeland is described as having been "dishonorably discharged from the United States Army after being convicted, at court martial, of distributing marijuana and related offenses."
Case History
Copeland pleaded Guilty to one charge: Assaulting, Resisting, or Impeding Law Enforcement Officers. The other charges are dismissed. Sentenced on 5/8/2023 to 36 months of incarceration; 36 months supervised release, with first six months served on home detention; $100 special assessment; $2,000 restitution. Copeland received a full pardon on January 20, 2025
