Current status
Hernández returned to Honduras after the federal pardon. A Honduran court later closed a separate fraud and money-laundering case, according to El País; that foreign disposition does not reverse the U.S. trial verdict or turn the federal pardon into an exoneration.

Original Case

A March 8, 2024 jury convicted Hernández of cocaine-importation conspiracy, possessing machine guns and destructive devices in furtherance of drug trafficking, and conspiracy to possess those weapons. On June 26, 2024 he received 45 years in prison, five years of supervised release and an $8 million fine.

Clemency

Trump granted Hernández a full and unconditional pardon on December 1, 2025, ending the 45-year federal prison sentence and permitting his release and return to Honduras. The grant covered the U.S. case; it did not decide any separate Honduran proceeding or judicially reverse the U.S. jury verdict.

Trump Connection

Trump said that people he “greatly respected” had urged him to act and that Hondurans had requested Hernández’s pardon. He characterized the former Honduran president’s treatment as harsh and unfair. Trump did not publicly identify the intermediaries in the cited account, and the grant came amid active U.S. political interest in Honduras. His explanation supplies the clemency rationale, not a judicial finding that the drug-trafficking verdict was wrong.
