Case Summary

Using police body camera and surveillance camera footage, FBI agents allegedly identified Jordan Bonenberger and Melanie Archer, who are both charged, as having been present during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. Multiple tipsters were also able to identity Bonenberger in images taken outside the U.S. Capitol, court documents indicate, and one tipster noted that the person the FBI identified as Bonenberger outside the Capitol was wearing the same clothes as a person captured by surveillance footage inside the building. Bonenberger initially agreed to an interview with the FBI, but declined in person. After seeing Bonenberger in person, FBI agents say they were able to confirm a match between him and images from the riot. In court, attorneys refer to Bonenberger as a member of the military, which the U.S. Marine Corps confirmed to NPR. According to a USMC spokesperson: “The Marine Corps is aware of the situation, and we will fully cooperate with federal authorities as appropriate." The spokesperson added that Bonenberger is "pending administrative separation from the Marine Corps for unrelated misconduct" and that the "administrative separation process was started prior to the indictment.” Bonenberger is a corporal and has no service deployments, according to the Marines.

Case History

Bonenberger pleaded Guilty to one charge: Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building. The other charges are dismissed. Sentenced on 9/5/2023 to 18 Months of Probation; Special Assessment $10; Restitution $500; Fine $2000; 50 hours of community service. Bonenberger received a full pardon on January 20, 2025
