Case Summary

Jeffrey Grace flew with his son to Washington, D.C., to sightsee and attend the rally for Donald Trump, according to court records. Grace told FBI agents, who interviewed him outside his residence on Jan. 21, 2021, that he got separated from his son after the Trump rally and later entered the Capitol building from the north side. He also told the FBI that he saw “an individual carrying what appeared to be a metal pipe, asked him to give him the pipe, and when the individual refused, Grace took it from him and placed it behind a wooden object in the Rotunda.” Grace also said that “the door he previously entered was closed, with police officers blocking it, so he followed a group of people and climbed out a broken window.” Grace allegedly appears in photographs behind the man carrying a lectern inside the rotunda. According to court documents, Grace told the FBI that he was not a member of any groups advocating violence but that he “knew people who were members of the following groups: Three Percenters, Proud Boys, and 1% Outlaw Motorcycle Gang.” Grace was arrested on Feb. 4, 2021, in western Washington state. According to a sentencing memorandum filed by the defendant in federal court, Grace served in the U.S. Army.
