Case Summary
Less than a week after the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot, a relative of Jason Comeau contacted the FBI and said that Comeau had admitted to breaching the building, according to charging documents filed in federal court. Comeau later gave a voluntary interview to FBI agents, court papers state, during which he said he had attended the pro-Trump rally earlier in the day and then marched toward the Capitol building. Comeau allegedly told agents that he climbed the stairs heading into the building and that after the crowd repeatedly chanted "Let us in," Capitol police moved aside, allowing the crowd to enter the building. Comeau allegedly told FBI agents that he believed he was allowed to enter the building and that he only progressed as far as a hallway. Prosecutors now allege that surveillance footage and cellphone video show Comeau going as far as the Capitol's Statuary Hall and remaining in the building for approximately 20 minutes. He also allegedly joined chants of "stop the steal," a slogan adopted by President Donald Trump and some of his supporters that falsely asserts that Trump won the 2020 presidential election. From July 2000 to December 2002, Comeau served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer, an Army spokesperson confirmed to NPR. Comeau did not have any combat deployments and held the rank of private at the end of his service, the spokesperson said.
