Case Summary
The FBI has accused Grady Owens of striking a police officer with a skateboard during the U.S. Capitol riot. While the FBI was investigating that case, phone records showed two mobile phones belonging to Owens’ father, Jason, also appeared to use cellphone sites at the Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021. Court documents say a witness identified Jason Owens as a masked man in photos with his son Grady Owens at the Capitol. Videos from the day show Jason Owens shoving and laying hands on at least two police officers, according to court documents. While FBI agents conducted a search of Jason Owens’ home in Blanco, Texas, he told them that he and his eldest son, Grady, and other family members had traveled to Washington on Jan. 5, 2021, to "show support for President Donald Trump and the country." Jason Owens told FBI agents that they also took Motorola radios to communicate throughout the day. He said he “did not recall having any violent encounters with law enforcement.”

Owens received a full pardon on January 20, 2025
