Case Summary

Grady Douglas Owens is accused of striking a police officer with a skateboard on Jan. 6, 2021, in the mob outside the U.S. Capitol. Owens is allegedly seen on body camera footage worn by another officer, but photographs eventually surfaced on the Twitter account @SeditionHunters that appear to show him more clearly. The FBI used those photos to conduct an image search, which led them to Owens' Instagram account. Flight manifests from United Airlines, given to the FBI through a grand jury subpoena, confirmed that Owens flew from San Antonio on Jan. 5, 2021, to Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C. He flew back to San Antonio on Jan. 7, court documents indicate. According to Owens' Instagram account, he is an instrumentalist, producer and sound engineer.

Case History

Owens pleaded Guilty to two charges, one a lesser version of the original: Assaulting, Resisting or Impeding Certain Officers and Disorderly Conduct in a Capitol Building. The other charges are dismissed. Sentenced on 6/23/2023 to 37 months incarceration; 24 months of supervised release; special assessment of $110; fine of $1,000 and restitution of $2,000. Owens received a full pardon on January 20, 2025
