Original Case
Santos pleaded guilty in August 2024 to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. On April 25, 2025, the court imposed 87 months in prison, $373,749.97 restitution and $205,002.97 forfeiture. DOJ describes campaign-donor theft, false campaign reporting, identity misuse, unemployment fraud and false House disclosures; this conduct summary must not be mistaken for a count-by-count conviction inventory. The October 2023 superseding indictment contained 23 counts: nine wire fraud, three money laundering, theft of public funds, two false statements to the House, conspiracy, two FEC false statements, two falsified FEC records, two aggravated identity theft, and access-device fraud. He pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in August 2024; the indictment inventory must not be described as 23 convictions.
Clemency
2025-10-17: Commutation of the entire sentence to time served, with no further fines, restitution, probation or other conditions, for the specified federal case.
Trump Connection
Santos served as a Republican U.S. representative. In announcing the commutation, Trump praised his Republican voting record. This is a documented public rationale, not proof of an undisclosed exchange.
