Case Summary

Gary Edwards did not post on his own social media accounts about being inside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, but his wife did. Edwards was initially identified from a tip that led the FBI to what appears to be his wife's Facebook page, where she wrote, "Okay ladies let me tell you what happened as my husband was there inside the Capitol Rotunda." She proceeded to describe her husband's activities inside the Capitol, saying that Edwards chatted frequently with the police, who she described as "very calm." Later she defended the motivations of the rioters, saying, "These were people who watched their rights being taken away, their votes stolen from them, their state officials violating the constitutions of their country and people who are not being given the opportunity to be able to have evidence shown." Federal prosecutors allege that photos and videos depict a man who appears to be Edwards inside and outside the Capitol building on the day of the riot. According to court documents, publicly available footage also shows Edwards making his way into the foyer of the Capitol, going deeper inside the building and eventually exiting.

Case History

Edwards pleaded Guilty to one charge: Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building. The other charges are dismissed. Sentenced 12/20/2021 to 1 year of probation; a $2,500 fine; $10 special assessment; $500 restitution; 200 hours of community service. Edwards received a full pardon on January 20, 2025
