Case Summary

Edward McAlanis shared photographs of his participation in the U.S. Capitol insurrection with friends, according to court documents. The FBI says it learned of McAlanis from a tipster who has mutual friends with him. The tipster shared two photos, which are included in court documents. One of those photos allegedly shows McAlanis posing with a statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Statuary Hall at the Capitol. Prosecutors say the man in the photos can also be seen in CCTV footage from the area of the Rotunda, and that the blue sweatshirt, black vest and black and red backpack match the photos sent by the tipster. The FBI found McAlanis’ phone number and says a search warrant to AT&T led to records that placed him inside the Capitol. Other records confirmed the phone number, along with a Pennsylvania address, prosecutors say. A second tipster confirmed the address in July 2021, according to the FBI, and said McAlanis told friends and family he broke into the Capitol.

Case History

McAlanis pleaded Guilty to one charge: Parading, Demonstrating, or Picketing in a Capitol Building. The other charges are dismissed. Sentenced 2/15/2022 to 2 years of probation; $500 in restitution; $10 special assessment; 60 hours community service. McAlanis received a full pardon on January 20, 2025
