Case Summary

According to court documents, a witness told the FBI they drove a man named Ed from Tennessee to Washington, D.C., on the day before the riot at the request of their pastor. The pair allegedly stayed in separate rooms of a hotel and then drove back to Tennessee on the day after the riot. Hotel and financial records belonging to Edward Kelley allegedly support that witness's claim. The FBI interviewed Kelley in June of 2021, during which he said he was near the Capitol but did not go inside. But prosecutors say video from the riot and other evidence allegedly show Kelley helping to throw a U.S. Capitol Police officer to the ground, pushing on a metal barricade against law enforcement, breaching a window with a piece of wood, and being confronted by Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman. Prosecutors estimate Kelley spent about 40 minutes inside the Capitol, including in the Senate gallery and the rotunda. He was arrested in May of 2022.
