Case Summary
FBI agents tracked down Edward Lang through a tip from an alleged childhood friend and by scouring his social media posts. According to charging documents, Lang posted photos and videos of himself at the Capitol on Jan. 6 and boasted about his participation. "I was the leader of Liberty today," said one of Lang's captions. "Arrest me. You are on the wrong side of history." According to court records, photos allegedly of Lang on Jan. 6, 2021, show him at times wielding a shield and a bat. Lang allegedly "raised the shield above his head and thrusted it in the direction of the law enforcement officers" and "swung, thrusted, and/or jabbed the bat at law enforcement officers multiple times." The following day, on Instagram, Lang said, "Pepper spray really does wonders for your complexion #1776.” Federal investigators also found a post in which Lang allegedly discussed what would follow the attack on the Capitol with another social media user. Lang said, “Guns…That’s it. One word. The First Amendment didn’t work, we pull out the Second. We’re all civilized people and we love going to work and praying to God on Sundays and having nice family barbeques…and that was every single person there. No one wants to take this and and die for our rights, but dying for our rights is the only option that any person with a logical brain sees right now. This is it.” According to multiple news reports, Lang's father, Ned Lang, is a former council member in Tusten, N.Y.
