Case Summary

On Jan. 6, 2021, David Moerschel and nine other members of the far-right extremist group the Oath Keepers moved in a tactical military formation used by infantryman up the stairs to the U.S. Capitol, according to court documents. Footage reportedly shows Moerschel wearing a long-sleeved black jacket and backward green baseball cap with Oath Keepers insignia. The group has been known to target and recruit active-duty members of the military and veterans, in part for their specialized skills. According to the FBI, the Oath Keepers believe a cabal of elites has co-opted the federal government by actively trying to strip Americans of their rights. Credit card transactions and intercepted messaging platforms reportedly show group members coordinated their actions ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021 rally, allegedly bringing weapons with them. According to court documents, they stored firearms at a northern Virginia hotel they referred to as “QRF,” or Quick Reaction Force. The FBI says the government obtained surveillance video from the Comfort Inn Ballston on Jan. 7, 2021, showing three individuals wheeling a concierge cart with at least one long gun case onto an elevator. Moerschel reportedly appears to be one of the individuals. The government was able to gain access to a Signal group messaging account used by members of the Oath Keepers, including Moerschel, who wrote under the name "Hatsy." A search warrant executed on the number used by that user connected the FBI to Moerschel, court documents say.
