Original Case
An August 2024 jury convicted Gentile in the GPB Capital fraud case. On May 9, 2025 he received seven years in prison. DOJ described securities fraud, securities-fraud conspiracy, wire-fraud conspiracy and wire fraud affecting more than 10,000 investors; the scheme raised approximately $1.6 billion, which is not an individual restitution figure.
Clemency
November 26, 2025: commutation of the entire federal sentence to time served, with no further fines, restitution, probation, or other conditions. This was not a pardon.
Trump Connection
Gentile’s commutation drew later congressional scrutiny after reporting about possible payments connected to clemency efforts. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Ruben Gallego asked for an inspector-general review, but their request was prompted by allegations and did not find that Gentile paid for relief. Trump’s grant names no advocate, gives no individualized rationale, and describes no personal relationship.
