Original Case
Former Major League Baseball player Darryl Strawberry pleaded guilty to a federal tax offense arising from income he failed to report. The court sentenced him to three years of probation, including a period of home confinement, and ordered restitution. The case was a tax conviction—not a prosecution for his widely reported substance-use history—and the later pardon covered the specified federal judgment.
Clemency
Trump granted Strawberry a full pardon in 2025 for the covered federal conviction. The grant relieved the legal consequences of that conviction but did not amount to a judicial reversal.
Trump Connection
Trump knew Strawberry as a celebrated former New York baseball star and publicly framed the pardon around his life after conviction. In explaining the grant, Trump emphasized Strawberry’s Christian faith, long-term sobriety, and work helping people facing addiction and recovery. That was a character-and-rehabilitation rationale for clemency, not a claim that the tax conviction had been legally erroneous.
