Case Summary
A mobile device recording from Jan. 6, 2021 showed a man trying to wash his eyes after being pepper-sprayed. He identified himself as “Cody from Rochester” and said in the video that he did not want to fight anyone and was pushed, according to court documents. The FBI, with the help of the independent organization of investigators known as Sedition Hunters identified him as Cody Mattice. Mattice was on the FBI's wanted list known as #FenceSnatcher because footage shows him ripping down a barrier that allowed protesters to bypass law enforcement. According to the FBI, Mattice can also be seen using a chemical agent to spray police officers. Mattice was charged alongside James Mault, who also allegedly used pepper spray against Capitol police officers.
Case History
Mattice pleaded Guilty to one charge: Assaulting, Resisting, or Impeding Certain Officers or Employees. The other charges are dismissed. Sentenced 7/15/2022 to 44 months incarceration; 36 months of supervised release; $2,000 in restitution; $100 special assessment. Mattice received a full pardon on January 20, 2025
