Case Summary

On Jan. 6, 2021, Christopher Maurer allegedly entered a tunnel at the U.S. Capitol, made his way toward the line of officers trying to guard the entrance, and attempted to pull a police shield and strike an officer helping another rioter with a medical emergency. After a couple of minutes, he exited the tunnel, but later re-entered, court documents indicate. This time around, he screamed and gestured at law enforcement. After he was sprayed with pepper spray, he allegedly picked up a long metal pipe and swung it at the front line of police officers at the tunnel. According to court records, he then displayed both of his middle fingers to police and shouted “F*** YOU A**HOLES!” Court records say he was identified by authorities through his cellphone records. Maurer was arrested in February 2023. According to a sentencing memo filed in court, Maurer served in the U.S. Navy.

Maurer pleaded Guilty to one charge: Assaulting, Resisting, or Impeding Certain Officers Using a Dangerous Weapon. The other charges are dismissed.
