Case Summary
Cepane Sarty was seen on closed-circuit television inside the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021, wearing a navy quilted jacket, a navy skull cap and a bandana used as a face covering, according to court documents. He and his brother, Seth Sarty, entered the building through the Senate Wing Door at 2:21 pm, shortly after that entrance was initially breached by protestors. For the next thirty-three minutes, they made their way through offices, hallways and the Capitol Rotunda before exiting the building. However, they re-entered the Rotunda around ten minutes later, and were allegedly seen on body-worn cameras in the middle of a group fighting police officers trying to clear the room. Federal agents allege that both brothers shoved officers during this altercation. They subsequently left the building for good at around 3:13 pm, after officers deployed a chemical irritant. Sarty was arrested on Feb. 5, 2024.
Case History
Sarty pleaded Not Guilty to all charges. Jury trial set for 6/2/2025. On 1/24/2025, the court grants the government’s motion to dismiss the case with prejudice.
