Case Summary
Carey Jon Walden of Kansas City, Mo., is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who told FBI agents he scaled a wall at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 climbed through a broken window, “which was already broken,” and spent about five minutes inside, according to a criminal complaint. “I was not asked to leave. I fist bumped and ‘Devil horned’ the SWAT line,” Walden wrote when the FBI asked him to describe his actions in his own words. “I am not part of any hate groups. I went with a bus of Trump supports (sic).” A witness who reported to Walden during his time in the Marine Corps told the FBI that Walden streamed several Facebook Live videos as he climbed the walls and entered the building. The complaint includes a photo looking down from the Capitol plaza that was posted to Walden’s Facebook, captioned “I had just climbed the west wall lol.” According to a sentencing memo filed by the defendant in court, Walden served in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
Case History
Walden pleaded Guilty to the single charge. Sentenced 1/19/2022 to 3 years of probation, 30 days home confinement/ location monitoring; $500 restitution; $10 special assessment; 60 hours of community service. Walden received a full pardon on January 20, 2025
