Original Case

Rapper Bill Kapri, known as Kodak Black, was prosecuted in South Florida for making false statements while acquiring or attempting to acquire firearms. The federal case resulted in convictions on two false-statement counts. On November 13, 2019, the court sentenced him to 46 months in prison and three years of supervised release.

Clemency

Trump commuted Kapri’s federal prison sentence on January 19, 2021, allowing his release after he had served roughly half of the 46-month term. The action was a commutation rather than a pardon: it shortened the federal imprisonment but did not erase the convictions or protect him from later state or federal proceedings.

Trump Connection

The White House said pastor Darrell Scott, former New York City police commissioner Bernard Kerik, Rabbi Schneur Kaplan, and others supported Kapri’s commutation. It cited his charitable work and philanthropic commitments as part of the rationale. The documented route to Trump was organized clemency advocacy rather than a formal campaign or White House role.

Since Clemency

  • 2021-04-28 · criminal guilty plea and sentence

In Florence County, South Carolina, Kapri pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and battery, a reduced charge in the 2016 sexual-conduct case. The court imposed ten years suspended to eighteen months' probation, counseling and an apology.

Legal Status: State assault-and-battery conviction after federal commutation. Original first-degree criminal sexual conduct charge was an allegation, not the offense of conviction.

  • 2024-02-21 · criminal case

Kapri was released after receiving time served for a federal supervision violation. A separate drug-possession charge had been dismissed.

Legal Status: Supervision outcome and separate dismissal; do not equate the dismissed charge with a conviction.

  • 2026-05-06 · criminal case

Kapri surrendered on an MDMA-trafficking arrest warrant arising from a November 2025 Orlando investigation and pleaded not guilty.

Legal Status: Arrest allegation, not conviction; see September resolution.

  • 2026-09-08 · reported state court disposition

NBC6 reported that a Broward judge granted a defense motion and dismissed Kapri's fleeing-and-eluding charge on September 8, 2026.

Legal Status: Attributed contemporaneous court reporting; the underlying dismissal order was not independently retrieved. This Broward disposition is separate from the September 11 Orange County prosecutorial declination.

  • 2026-09-11 · criminal case

The Orange County matter closed after prosecutors declined formal charges. Reporting on court records says evidence did not sufficiently establish possession; bond and pretrial requirements ended.

Legal Status: No conviction in this matter. Obtain closing docket/order before production.
